Wood Furniture

There are a few general terms that are used to describe wood furniture that are important to know:

"Case goods" is a term for furniture that is not upholstered and is typically boxy or case-like in construction (chests, tables, desks, etc.).

The term "solid" wood is used to describe furniture in which all of the exposed parts are the same wood; the frame or support system may be comprised of a combination of different woods.

"Hardwood" applies to trees that lose their leaves annually. Hardwoods frequently used in furniture production are cherry, maple, oak, pecan, teak, walnut, mahogany and poplar.

"Softwood" refers to trees that retain their leaves year-round including cedar, cypress, fir, pine and redwood.

"Engineered wood" is a derivative wood product that is manufactured by binding together wood strands, fibers, or veneers with adhesives to form composite materials such as plywood, particle board and medium-density fiberboard (MDF).
